Paranormal Vocabulary

    Here's a quick run-down of some common terms you might encounter in the paranormal community.  We do not claim to be the definitive source for definitions, so if there is a word missing or you need to know what the term means please contact us.

Vocabulary

APPARITION: A supernatural appearance of a person or thing, esp. a ghost; a specter or phantom.

DEBUNK: to expose or excoriate as being pretentious, false, or exaggerated.

DEMONIC: Inspired as if by a demon, indwelling spirit.

EARTHBOUND: Attached or confined to the earth or to earthly concerns.

ECTOPLASM: The visible substance believed to emanate from the body of a spiritualistic medium during communication with the dead.

ELECTRONIC VOICE PHENOMENA EVP): Is the appearance of intelligible voices on recording media that has no known physical explanation.

ELEMENTAL: pertaining to the agencies, forces, or phenomena of physical nature. Of such character as to resemble a force of nature in power or effect.

GHOST:The soul of a dead person, a disembodied spirit imagined, usually as a vague, shadowy or evanescent form, as wandering among or haunting living persons.

GHOST HUNTING: Various investigation methods used to determine the authenticity of ghosts and hauntings.

HAUNTING: To inhabit, visit, or appear to in the form of a ghost or other supernatural being.

ORBS: Round, opaque lights captured on film thought to be spirits or paranormal activity.

PARANORMAL: Beyond the range of normal experience or scientific explanation.

PHANTOM: Something apparently seen, heard, or sensed, but having no physical reality; a ghost or an apparition.

PHENOMENON: An outward sign of the working of the laws of nature or an extraordinary happening.

PSYCHIC: Outside of natural or scientific knowledge; spiritual.

SPECTRE: A visible incorporeal spirit, esp. one of a terrifying nature; ghost; phantom; apparition.

SUPERNATURAL: of, pertaining to, or being above or beyond what is natural; unexplainable by natural law or phenomena; abnormal.
